I obtained a server (HP Proliant ML310) just for MOSS 2007. I have an existing domain running Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 Premium, which includes Exchange 2003, SQL Server 2000, and ISA 2004. I plan to join the HP to the domain and use Exchange and SQL from it.
I have 3 questions:
(1) What is the recommended setup for the HP server, partition-wise? I'm thinking at least two - one for the OS (~50-70 GBs) and the rest (400+ GB) for MOSS and the SQL database(s) (indexing, too?) I'm very new to MOSS so could really use some advice.
(2) Is there a paper or blog entry somewhere that explains how to connect MOSS to SQL and Exchange on other servers, but place the SQL database(s) where the the admin chooses?
(3) Are there other considerations I haven't mentioned that I should/must do as part of a 'best-practices' setup & installation?

Mike Webb Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust, Inc. a conservation non-profit (IRS 501(c)(3)) organization Hi Mike, Great questions; please see responses below. - When setting MOSS up the SharePoint Configuration tool allows you too point @ where you want the databases to live. There are permissions that need to be setup first to ensure that that MOSS has the right access to create the databases. With regards to integration into other line of business applications like Exchange or even an Microsoft Business Solutions products like CRM or GP you'll have to find that on the connecting applications website. We plan on improving our reach on SHAREPOINTCOMMUNITY.COM in terms of integration with other Microsoft based products.
(3) Are there other considerations I haven't mentioned that I should/must do as part of a 'best-practices' setup & installation?

I am installing MOSS 2007 and when I try to start my Excel calculation services nothing happens and it doesn't start. I still have the server farm configuration not complete red text on my page. My SQL server is separate server and I am running the front end and the application services on one machine. I am also using VM virtual servers in this test environment. I want to know how can I start my Excel calculation services and move on to the next step of my configuration. Thank you for your help. Cheers

Cheers Can you provide any information from the Event Viewer or SharePoint Logs that might shed some light on why Excel Services isn't starting? I would fully configure your MOSS environment first; this means creating SSP's, Web Applications and Site Collections.
