Make MOSS less boring

this my frist time deploying MOSS. I am trying to make the web parts more visual. For example Iwant the Calendar to look like an actual calendar rather than just being a bunch of tasks and I want the news to scroll. How can I do that stuff? do I have to create my own Webparts? Also where do i start with creating web parts if im good with .net

In regards to developing web parts I'd start with the Software Development Kit. Since you have some .Net experience already; it should make sense in the SDK. In terms of design you can use the SDK as well.
