Okay, its like this. We use the helpdesk part a lot to the Sharepoint. And on our company we have a lot of people handeling different products.
For example we have one person that handles the network, one person that handles software issues and so on.
Today when a user login and uses the helpdesk, he fills out a form and sends it.. regarding what his issue is he get to chose if it´s a "Hardware", "software" or "other" type of issue that he have.
What I like to with the helpdesk is that when a user select his issue for ex. "network", an alert should be sent to our person that is handeling all the network issues, because it´s not always clear for the user what type off issue that is assigned to what person.
We have a "Assigned to" column but if we could get the "product type field" to automaticly select the right person from the Assignes to column or something like that this would be realy great!
I hope this might be a little bit more clear?

You can reference this article which describes how to can extend the alert functionality through custom alert result channels. Building Custom Alert Result Channels in SharePoint Portal Server 2003msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms916799.aspx
