I've built and configured a SharePoint topology with two WFE servers in a public facing DMZ. The SQL Backend Servers are behind the firewall within the Internal Corporate network. I've also built a search server to provide that functionality. The appropriate ports are opened and accessible. The creation and configuration of SharePoint was executed with the psconfig command line tool. The problem I'm having is that the creation and configuration did not initially include the search service on a different server. However, once the application is up, I would like to create/start the search service on a seperate server. The message I consistently get is 'Error starting search service'. I attempted to use the GUI to start the service but no success. I tried using the command line tool stsadm - o spsearch -action start. No success with this option either. What do I need to do get the search service running within my site but on a search server which I would like to be different from my WFE servers. Would appreciate some feedback from anyone and everyone who can shed some light on leading down the path to resolving this issue.
