Help! Cannot create a new page IE bombing

********MS IE error when trying to create a new page (that was customized by a consultant before me):

The doc could not be created.
The req. app may not be installed properly, or the template for this doc lib cannot be opened.

Please try the following:
1. check the gen. sett. for this doc lib for the name fo the template, and install the application necessary for opening the template. IF the app was set to install on first use, run the app and then try creating a new doc again.

2. If you have permission to mod this doc lib, go to gen. sett. for the lib and configure a new template.

1. what app needs to be installed/set to install? don't understand that one.
2. i don't want to reconfig the template if that is going to overwrite what the consultant who created the custom page for us did.

When you say "Page" do you mean a new web part page or a new document? We've seen this error before when clicking the 'New' button in a document library when the application extension (.docx) wasn't associated to Microsoft Word.

So how do I assoc. that extension? Is it a setting somewhere?

no, no help, the box was already not checked for word docs.

plus, while I say a "doc" I'm not sure that is correct. it is just a doc lib that the consultant named "pages", but I just don't know enough about WSS to know what is going on.

Do you know if a template file has been created for the library; for example under the Pages library click on Settings / Document Library Settings / Advanced Settings. Under Document Template is anything listed?

That was something I checked initially and it was there. I thought maybe it was missing since the error seemed to indicate that.

I got lucky and stumbled on the fix by doing the following...

in the doc lib settings I added the "web part page" content type and set that as the only type to show in the "visible on new button". I think we never hit this before because we always just created pages by using the site actions button, but it doesn't make sense to make a "pages" library and then not be able to create a new page right from the create new button. I think it was just an oversight by the consultant who created all of this originally.
