I am trying to get the pdf icon to show on my wss3 site. I added a 16x16 icon to the c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\12\template\images\pdf16.gif.
I added the line to the c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\12\template\xml\docicon.xml file as <Mapping Key="pdf" value="pdf16.gif"/>
Restarted IIS and even rebooted the server but the adobe icon does not show it just shows a blank explorer icon.
Any advice to get the icon to show.

Well from the instructions you have given so far it will not work..
You need to install the ifilter version 5 or 6 or install Adobe Reader 8 on the server ifilter is included) make your registery changes and then force WSS to Crawl the database.
There are plenty of How to's on the Net just Google for it..
