Best Way to personalize web part

I want a user to come in and select which documents they want to see (like timesheets etc.). When they log back in (say another day) I want them to see only those kind of documents they previously selected. Does anybody have any idea's or direction to point me in?

Not without moving to MOSS 2007 and using audiences. Users can still make the page look like there own by moving around web parts; however as far as showing content specific to a user; or giving them a selection would be a custom web part.
