Contacts list with inline images

I would like a contact list that displays a small (say 100px by 100px) image next to each entry.

I can add an image as an attachment to each contact, but what I really want is for the image to be displayed in-line next to each contact's details.

What is the best way to go about achieving this? Do I need to make my own web part from scratch?

You can make your own web part but what might be easier is to use the data view instead inside SharePoint Designer and work from their. The data view allows you to edit colomns and tweak the SharePoint list to your liking.
