Can't perform searchs in WSS 3.0

Hello,

I have a WSS 3.0 - whenever I perform searches I receive the error:

"Your search cannot be completed because of a service error. Try your search again or contact your administrator for more information."

I have looked around the internet for fixes and I saw this:-

However when in the SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration, I noticed the Windows SharePoint Services Search is not present.

Would anyone know a fix for this problem? I'm not to sure where the service has gone!
